Description

This GDOT project will make significant upgrades to the Interstate 85 and State Route (SR) 138 interchange and surrounding SR 138 corridor. The project’s goals include:

reconstructing the interchange
extending two I-85 ramps
widening SR 138 from Goodson Connector to Lester Road/Miles Terrace

The existing interchange will be converted to a diverging diamond interchange, sometimes called a double crossover diamond. This design allows vehicles to cross to the opposite side of the road onto freeway ramps without waiting for a signal. The entire SR 138 corridor will be widened to three lanes of travel in each direction.

Business and Homeowner Concerns

The goal of the project is to improve efficiency, mobility, and capacity in the area. In addition, the project aims to decrease traffic congestion and reduce crash rate and severity. With these ambitious construction goals, the impact on local property owners is expected to be significant.

In addition to work on the roadway, the lack of adequate pedestrian and cyclist facilities on either side of the interchange will be addressed. While new sidewalks enhance safety and walkability, their construction can also heavily impact local property owners. Traffic signals will also need to be upgraded all along the corridor and there will be closures, such as access to Oakley Road east of the interchange.
